What is Forestry Mulching?
Forestry mulching is a land clearing method that uses machinery to cut, grind and clear vegetation into small pieces. This method provides many advantages to both the customer and the environment.
Forestry mulching can selectively cut and recycle vegetation like trees, heavy branches, thick brush, and stumps into a natural environmentally friendly top layer of mulch covering the ground. This natural barrier will assist in preventing the regrowth of invasive species and help promote the new growth of natural vegetation. The use of a mulcher is an excellent method of land clearing, when using a mulcher you reduce the need to come back to fix the land.
Forestry mulching is a straightforward process that typically includes only one step, you don’t need multiple machines for site prep, cutting, felling, hauling, or site clean-up. Mulching can be done on small or large lots. The result is what we like to call a “park-like environment”.
With fewer machines and less manual labor, you’ll save more time & money!
The benefits of Forestry Mulching
If you are a landowner, you should consider forestry mulching as an option for clearing your land. This land clearing method is becoming increasingly popular because it is less expensive and time-consuming than traditional methods, such as burn piles, grubbing with heavy bulldozers, and hand clearing.
Here are some of the benefits of mulching:
- Mulch prevents the regrowth of vegetation
- Creates more usable land that can be used for recreation, farming, gardening, or building
- Increases property value by making the land more accessible & attractive
- Cost-effective & efficient
- Environmentally friendly, less destructive to the land
- Reduces fuel for wildfires
- Does not leave large stump holes to fill
- No brush piles left & No hauling debris
It’s important to keep in mind that you will need to maintain this area in the future & there is no land management option that will give you a one-and-done solution to maintain your land.
Furthermore, depending on your project we highly recommend planting grass seed or native vegetation immediately afterward to help remediate the new growth of unwanted or invasive species. The grass seed will essentially compete for growth & choke out the surrounding root system.
Other methods of clearing land
Grubbing & Dozing
This technique covers a lot of land quickly. However, this process results in a rough finish with large holes that need to be filled with dirt. Also, the contractor will need to haul away or burn the mass amounts of material left over.
Burn Piles
A prescribed, pre-approved burn is an effective way to clear and control plant growth, but it can also substantially change vegetation & enhance soil erosion. This technique can be difficult to selectively remove vegetation and it increases the risk of out-of-control fire damage.
Hand Clearing
Clearing land with handheld equipment and tools is one of the least invasive ways, but it is the most time-consuming technique. A great option for smaller areas.
Mulching
Mulching can selectively cut light or thick vegetation efficiently. Plus, you put all of the organic material back onto the ground leaving a protective top layer. Nothing needs to be hauled away.
How much does land clearing cost?
There are many factors that contribute to the cost of each project, the amount you pay will vary depending on the site’s location, topography, density, and type of vegetation.
- The average cost of clearing land is typically $2,000 – $7,000
- The Low-High range can be anywhere from $800 – $13,000+ (Based on land size, topography, location, access limitations, tree removal, road/bridge building, finished surface, disposal and other factors)
As a general rule, land clearing professionals can clear approximately 1-10 acres per day based on the factors mentioned above. You can expect forested lots to cost far more than lots with grasses and shrubs.
